Qui ne connait pas mysonpeter.com ? Nombreux sont les internautes américains qui, à l’occasion d’Halloween, font référence à ce site présenté comme l’un des plus tristes et des plus effrayants sur internet.
L’histoire de Peter
La première page donne le ton : « Mon fils Peter à toujours adoré jouer à cache-cache. En fait, il aime tellement cela qu’il me réveille au milieu de la nuit pour y jouer. Le seul problème est que Peter est mort depuis 8 ans. Ce site raconte l’enfer que j’ai vécu et que je continue à vivre chaque nuit« . C’est Richard, le père de Peter, qui s’exprime. Le 15 mars 1992, son épouse laisse tomber accidentellement son sèche-cheveux dans la baignoire ou se trouve Peter, 4 ans. Richard perd sa femme et son fils. Peu de temps après, et de façon régulière, le petit garçon hante les nuits de son père, le réveillant souvent pour lui proposer de jouer à cache-cache. Une vidéo accessible depuis le site montre même l’image d’un spectre qui traverse le couloir et qui est présenté comme étant celui de Peter.
Doute et célébrité
Immédiatement après la création du site en 2001, des internautes expriment des doutes sur l’authenticité de cette histoire : le site est géré par une société, creepysites, qui produit des shows télévisés et administre plusieurs sites au parfum « paranormal » et dont certains sont à l’évidence des canulars. mysonpeter.com est pourtant un grand succès, et il est encore régulièrement cité par des lecteurs attristés, apeurés ou simplement émus par cette terrible histoire.
Le seul fantôme du site : une page web
C’est un mail transmis sur la liste publique de l’AFIS qui me conduit vers ce site. Sa simplicité, visiblement étudiée, son étrange courrier des lecteurs et cette mystérieuse vidéo sonnent étrangement… faux. Depuis la page web qui inclut le document filmé (http://www.mysonpeter.com/code/09dp.html), je remonte dans l’arborescence du site et accède directement au répertoire : http://www.mysonpeter.com/code/, où je découvre une page web cachée intitulée « icanstilltellyourwifebill.htm ». Cette page, quand elle est accédée directement, redirige le lecteur vers Amazon, sur la page d’un DVD vendu depuis le site du célèbre marchand en ligne. Mais il suffit d’ouvrir le code source HTML de cette page cachée pour y découvrir un message de l’auteur du site.
Confessions cachées
Dans un long message, Tim Street, auteur de mysonpeter.com et Cassandra’s site, revendique ses créations.
Pour Tim, qui souhaitait au départ réaliser des court-métrages sur Internet, c’est une forme d’art. Il crée son premier canular : « For The Love Of Julie » (Pour l’amour de Julie), un site soi-disant créé par un homme fou d’une jeune fille appelée Julie et pour qui il met en place un sanctuaire virtuel protégé par un mot de passe. creepysites.com se joint au projet, qui prend soudain une tournure beaucoup plus impressionnante. On met en place des caméras pour suivre partout une Julie qui n’existe pas, à tel point que la police finit par contacter les auteurs du site. La célébrité ouvre à Tim les portes des studios holliwoodiens : « (…) j’ai obtenu des rendez-vous partout à Hollywood et j’étais sur le point de signer un gros contrat avec un studio. Le seul problème était que personne ne savait comment faire de l’argent à partir de mon art. Tout le monde aimait et pensait que c’était cool mais ils n’ont jamais été convaincus que quelqu’un paierait pour cela.« .
Pour autant, Street continue à mettre en place des sites basés sur le même modèle : émotion, pseudo-amateurisme, mystères et frissons. « Bon je savais que j’avais mis le doigt sur quelque chose, je créais du contenu interactif émotionnellement fort que les gens aimaient et qui me valait une certain reconnaissance, alors j’ai continué. J’ai créé My Son Peter, un site sur un homme qui était hanté par le fantôme de son fils décédé, et le site de Cassandra, jeune fille enfermée dans une institution psychiatrique parce qu’elle pensait que son petit ami était devenu un sorcier. »
Il mentionne ensuite son DVD « I Can Still Tell Your Wife Bill » et conclut par cette phrase : « Je bosse sur ma prochaine histoire« .

If you went to ICanStillTellYourWifeBill.com, you experienced part of an Interactive Story or what I call a Digital Yarn.
In 1999 everyone was so excited about Short Films on the Internet! but I wanted to use the Internet as its own storytellin devise the way a book or a movie is a storytelling devise. So I set out to create original stories that were organic to the web and wouldn’t use up too much bandwidth. First I created, For The Love Of Julie, a site that appeared to be set up by a man so madly in love with a young woman named Julie that he built an online shrine to her and password protected it. But when the guys at creepysites.com hacked into his site the whole world got to see how this guy had broken into Julie’s house, hidden cameras and was stalking her. Not only was he following her every move, he was also keeping an online journal of it. Well it didn’t take long before I was contacted by the Los Angeles Police Department, The Santa Monica Police Department and the ever so vigilant Los Angeles County Sheriffs department and asked about my little online drama but instead of ending up in jail I found myself on TV. The next thing I knew I had meetings all over Hollywood and was about to sign a big deal with a studio. The only problem was that no one knew how to make money with my art. Everyone liked it and thought it was cool but they never thought anyone would pay for it.
Well I knew I was on to something, I was creating emotionally engaging interactive content that people enjoyed and it was getting me a lot of attention so kept going. I built My Son Peter, a site about a man who was haunted by his dead son’s ghost and Cassandra’s s Site about a girl locked away in a mental institution because she thought her boyfriend had become a warlock. As I went along I made mistakes and I learned from them but all the while I thought that what I was creating could some day be experienced on Interactive TV. Then I met with Interactive TV technology companies from around the country. After looking at several different Interactive TV systems I through up my hands in frustration as I knew I couldn’t build my stories for seven different platforms. Finally I asked one of the Interactive TV guys if he was showing me his demo on his companies software and he said, I asked him what he was showing it to me on and he said, DVD. It was at that point, I knew I could create Interactive Stories on DVD and pay for my art.
I Can Still Tell Your Wife Bill.com is the first DVD Yarn that I have created. It has received good reviews and a few bad ones. (Unfortunately I had to send an advanced screener out that was a clunky two disk experience and it received some negative press but hey that comes with the territory.)
